The Dispatchable Load Market Simulator ("bid simulator") is used by Market Participants in Ontario's wholesale electricity market who are considering having their resources become dispatchable by the Ontario Independent Electricity Market Operator (IESO). Once dispatchable, a participant must provide the IESO with energy and (optionally) operating reserve bids such that IESO systems continuously send dispatch instructions to the participant based on the current market prices and any transmission constraints at their resource.
The bid simulator uses historical data collected continuously from the IESO to allow a participant to test their bids and evaluate what their dispatch quantities and costs/credits would have been had those bids been used for real. This allows the participant to understand the impact of certain bids and develop their bid strategy prior to committing their resources as dispatchable.
The simulator analyzes the historical 5-minute data for the location of choice to determine several important measurements quantities and charges:
The output of the Bid Simulator are the hypothetical results that a dispatchable participant would expect had the Energy and Operating Reserve bid(s) been used for the select dates. The output is the Energy Costs, Operating Reserve and Congestion Management Settlement Credits, Dispatch Quantities (Energy and Operating Reserve MW) and Prices for each period.
The first section reports on the Detail Records. These can be the discrete 5 Minute intervals, or data rolled up to the hour or even the day. The sample below shows the Quantities and Costs, which have been rolled up to the day. The names for each column are explained in abbreviations.

The Monthly Summary is produced next. This shows the Average Prices and MW Quantities, as well as the total Costs and Credits for each month.

Finally, a 24 Hour Profile is produced that shows the hourly average values for the whole evaluation period. This gives an indication of what the affects of the bid are on an hourly basis, and helps identify the potential of load-shifting by changing your bids.

The examples above have shown only Quantities & Costs. Other choices for data results are available as well. When selecting All Data details, the report includes all Market and Shadow Prices, as well it shows the individual 10 minute and 30 minute Operating Reserve dispatches.

Choosing Dispatch Events does not show the prices, but shows the Energy and OR Dispatches and flags the times that your Energy Dispatch changes either UP or Down. This is used to assess the disruptive impact that your bid would have on your operations. The Monthly Summary and Hourly Profile Reports (not shown) show the total and hourly average, respectively for the number of dispatch events.
